Sight & Fix: Privacy Policy
Last updated: 27 October 2026
Sight & Fix ("the app") is made by Garry Hartshorne, trading as Hartshorne Marine ("I", "me"). This policy explains what the app does with your information. The short version: everything stays on your phone. I don't collect it, see it, or sell it.
What the app stores, and where
- Your sights and positions. DR positions, sights, chronometer checks, fixes, and your vessel and navigator names are stored on your phone, in the app's own storage. In the free version only the planner settings are kept.
- Almanac packs. The yearly almanac files are stored on your phone so the app works with no signal.
- Purchase status. The app remembers which plan or almanac years you've bought, so it knows what to unlock.
None of this is sent to me or to anyone else. There is no account and no sign-in, and the app has no analytics, advertising or tracking.
Location (optional)
The app only uses your phone's location if you tap Use GPS fix time to check the chronometer. It reads the time stamp of the GPS fix. The position isn't saved or sent anywhere. You can say no, and the app still works: you type your DR in yourself.
Microphone (optional, Listen only)
The Time tab's Listen feature can use your phone's microphone to hear the second ticks or pips of a radio time signal. The app asks for microphone permission only when you tap Listen, and it uses the microphone only while Listen is running (about 20 seconds, or until you tap Stop). The sound is analysed on your phone, in memory, to find the ticks. No audio is recorded, saved, or sent anywhere. Only the result, the phone's clock error, is kept, and only if you choose to log it. You can turn off the app's microphone permission at any time in your phone's settings.
When the app uses the internet
The app works offline. It only connects when you choose to:
- Almanac updates. Almanac data is built into the app. New years' almanacs arrive with app updates through Google Play (or, for the web version, from the site the app is loaded from). No account or personal data is sent.
- Network time check (optional, in port). An optional time check reads the current time from the server the app was loaded from. Nothing about you is sent.
Purchases
Purchases and subscriptions go through the Apple App Store or Google Play. They handle the payment and your payment details under their own privacy policies. I never see your card or bank details. The app only asks the store what your account owns.
Sharing your sight log
Nothing leaves the app unless you choose to share it. When you save or share the PDF sight log, you choose where it goes (for example email, Files or a printer), using your phone's own share and print options.
Deleting your data
You can delete a sight, a time check or all sights in the app. Uninstalling the app deletes everything it has stored on your phone. On Android the app's data isn't included in Google backups. On iPhone, your phone's own iCloud or computer backups may include app data, under Apple's terms.
Children
The app is a navigation tool for adults and isn't directed at children.
Changes
If the app ever starts collecting information (for example cloud backup or syncing between devices), I'll update this policy and the store privacy labels before that version is released, and ask for your permission in the app where that's needed.
