Hastings is Western Port's working side: a commercial port with oil and gas terminals up North Arm, ships at all hours, and Western Port Marina, the main place in the bay to fuel up. Stony Point, further south, is where the Western Port ferry leaves the Mornington Peninsula. It's sheltered from the ocean swell but has big tides, and a lot of the bay dries.

Ships and channels

Ships. Parks Victoria says large ships use the Western Port channels day and night and sometimes leave the fairways. Their blind spot can be hundreds of metres long. Keep clear of them at all times, never anchor in a shipping channel (it's the law), don't assume a ship can see you, and never tie up to a buoy or beacon.

Harbour Control. NGA says Western Port Harbour Control at Stony Point directs all port operations. It lists VHF 14 for pilots and Harbour Control, with 6, 8 and 16 also listed for Harbour Control. NGA's contact details for the port are dated, so check the current Ports Victoria notices for the port before relying on them. Ports Victoria issued new Harbour Master's Directions for Hastings in August 2026 (Ports Victoria NtM 404-2026).

Hanns Inlet. Between Sandy Point and Stony Point, Hanns Inlet is a drying flat with a narrow, winding channel (NGA least depth 2.1 m) to the naval depot at its head. A red beacon about 0.6 mile north of Stony Point marks the edge of the flat.

Tides and mud

Western Port's tides can range up to 3 m, and at low tide much of the bay becomes unnavigable mud. Stay in the channels: boats that stray can be stuck for eight hours or more (Parks Victoria). NGA gives streams of about 2 kn in North and East Arms.

Berths and facilities

  • Marina. OpenStreetMap shows Western Port Marina at Hastings, the base of Westernport Coast Guard (flotilla VF4).
  • Fuel. At Western Port Marina, Hastings, and Yaringa Marina, Somerville (Parks Victoria).
  • Pump-out. Yaringa Marina (Parks Victoria).
  • Public berths. The Western Port guide lists Hastings Pier in its berthing table; check the signs for time limits. Ferries run from Stony Point Wharf, with stops at Cowes Jetty and Tankerton Jetty on French Island.
  • Speed. 5 kn within 50 m of swimmers, other boats and structures, within 100 m of a dive flag, in 5-knot zones and in mooring grounds.

Safety and radio

Westernport Coast Guard (VF4) and Volunteer Marine Rescue Hastings cover Western Port and offshore waters out to 30 nm (vic.gov.au). Marine Radio Victoria monitors VHF 16 (67 alternative) around the clock. In an emergency call on VHF 16 or ring 000.

Victorian rules in brief

  • Heightened risk. On vessels up to 12 m underway, the Victorian Recreational Boating Safety Handbook counts these among the times of heightened risk: crossing an ocean bar, boating in a Designated Hazardous Area (Port Phillip Heads is one), boating from an hour after sunset to an hour before sunrise, in restricted visibility, or where a gale, storm force or severe weather warning is current. Lifejacket rules are tighter then; check the handbook's tables for your boat.
  • Warnings. The Bureau of Meteorology issues strong wind (26 to 33 kn), gale (34 to 47 kn) and storm force (48 kn and over) warnings. Safe Transport Victoria strongly advises small craft not to go out when one is current.
  • Radio. Marine Radio Victoria monitors VHF 16 (67 alternative) 24/7 out to 20 nm, gives forecasts twice daily, and broadcasts current warnings on VHF 67 at 48 minutes past every even hour (the first at 00:47), eastern standard time (handbook).
