Nuku'alofa Harbour
Nuku'alofa is Tonga's capital and main port of entry. NGA describes it as a natural harbour protected by reefs but open to northerly winds, and warns that the alongside berths can become untenable for small vessels, forcing them to anchor out. Ports Authority Tonga runs the port; the anchorage areas are the ones the harbourmaster recommends.

Getting in
The approach. Use Ava Lahi, the principal channel, with its ranges. NGA advises not attempting it after dark without local knowledge. See the Tongatapu approaches page for the channels and dangers.
Pilotage. NGA says pilotage is compulsory for foreign vessels over 500 gt or more than 45 m long, for foreign vessels over 200 gt or 35 m carrying oil or hazardous liquids in bulk, and for any vessel with defects that materially affect its navigation. Others may ask for advice on the best time to transit. NGA gives the port's hours as 0830–1630, and 1 hour before a vessel's arrival.
Landmarks. NGA says the flagstaff at the root of the pier is reported prominent from the entrance of Ava Lahi, and that conspicuous radio masts and tanks stand east-south-east of the town jetty.
Anchoring and berthing
- Where to anchor. NGA says to anchor in areas recommended by the harbourmaster. The anchorage is clear except for three reefs that dry 0.3 to 0.6 m, lying 0.5 mile NE, 0.9 mile NNW and 1.8 miles N of the root of the pier.
- Cyclone season. NGA says more shelter and better holding ground are found in the bight north-east of the Queen Salote Wharf pierhead during the cyclone season.
- No-anchoring areas. NGA says a major part of Nuku'alofa harbour is prohibited to anchoring and fishing. Ask the harbourmaster where you can go.
- Boat harbours. NGA says dredged boat harbours lie either side of Queen Salote Wharf; they're best seen on the chart (TO 504). OpenStreetMap marks a boat harbour beacon and the island ferry terminal west of the main wharf.
- Wharves. NGA describes Vuna Wharf as a T-shaped jetty in front of the government buildings, with a 120 m berth used by cruise vessels, and two wrecks (5.7 m and 13.2 m) 92 m and 185 m south-east of its end. Queen Salote Wharf has four numbered berths for cargo, tankers, ro-ro and local trade.
- Current at the wharf. NGA says the surface current at Queen Salote Wharf runs west, with an easterly counter-current at 5.5 m.
Clearing in
Nuku'alofa as a port of entry. Tonga Customs' ports-of-entry page (read 28 October 2026) lists Nuku'alofa Port for Tongatapu. The Customs immigration page puts the Immigration Department on Salote Road, and OpenStreetMap shows immigration offices near the waterfront.
- Tell Customs 24 hours ahead. Tonga Customs' Advance Notice of Arrival (small craft) form must reach Customs at least 24 hours before your ETA, by email or fax (the addresses are on the form). If you can't send it electronically, the form says you may give notice another way, for example by phone. It asks for crew and passport details, previous ports, firearms and any animals on board.
- Call on VHF 16 before you arrive. The form asks you to call Maritime Radio on VHF 16 before reaching your nominated Customs port, to confirm or update your ETA.
- Office hours and fees (dated). Customs works 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday. Its fees page (read 28 October 2026) lists inward or departing clearance as free in normal working hours, TOP 80 outside them and TOP 100 on weekends and public holidays. Special attendance out of hours needs an application on the approved form at least 2 working days ahead.
- Temporary admission. A private yacht can be entered under temporary admission without duty or tax. It must leave within 4 months unless Customs extends this by up to 8 more months (12 in all). Customs warns that breaking the conditions can mean severe penalties or seizure of the boat.
- Immigration. Passports must be valid for at least 6 months. Citizens of the countries on the Customs immigration page (Australia, New Zealand, the UK and the USA among them) can be given a 30-day visitor visa on arrival; everyone else needs a visa before arriving. Extensions are handled by the Immigration Department in Nuku'alofa (Salote Road) and Neiafu (Tonga Development Bank building, first floor). The page is written for air arrivals, so ask Customs how its return-ticket condition applies to yacht crew.
- Restricted goods. Firearms and ammunition need a licence, and TOP 10,000 or more in cash is a restricted import.
- Quarantine. The Ministry of Agriculture, Food & Forests' Quarantine Division inspects at seaports. Its meat rules cover ship's crew: no more than 20 kg of meat products per adult, commercially packed, sealed and labelled with the country of origin, from the origins it lists (for example Australia, New Zealand and the USA), and no meat from Samoa or Fiji. Declare animals on the arrival form.
- Leaving. Clear out on Customs form C15. Once cleared you must sail straight for your next overseas port and not stop anywhere else in Tonga; the form gives a fine of up to TOP 10,000.
Hazards and cautions
- Mayday on VHF 16, and set off your distress beacon (EPIRB or PLB) and leave it on until help arrives.
- Tonga Police emergency: 922
- Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand, 24 hours: +64 4 577 8030. Tonga lies inside the New Zealand search and rescue region.
- Northerlies. The harbour is open to the north (NGA). The alongside berths may become untenable for small vessels.
- Wrecks. NGA reports a wreck with 11.6 m over it about 0.5 mile south-west of Pangaimotu islet, with a special spherical buoy close by, and another with 10.4 m over it 0.3 mile south-west of the same islet.
- Buoys and lights (dated). NGA Pub. 126 reports (1990) that many Ava Lahi buoys were out of position and many lights weak and unreliable, and advises against transiting after dark without local knowledge.
Weather and seasons
- Squalls. NGA says that from December to April winds are generally easterly, but sudden, violent west and north-west squalls are common, and an average year has about 3 days of gales.
- Cyclone season (dated). Tonga Meteorological Services' Tropical Cyclone Seasonal Outlook for 2026–2027 (released 28 October 2026, read 30 October 2026) gives the official season as 1 November 2026 to 30 April 2027 and notes that cyclones have occasionally formed outside it. It expects an average season, with 2 to 4 tropical cyclones affecting Tonga and a moderate to high chance of at least one severe tropical cyclone, and the highest risk from January to March 2027. It also reports drought declarations in force for Tongatapu, 'Eua, Ha'apai and Niuatoputapu, with Vava'u and Niuafo'ou under drought warning, so plan your water. NGA Pub. 126 adds that at Nuku'alofa sudden, violent west and north-west squalls are common from December to April.
Rules in brief
- Anchoring and fishing. Prohibited over a major part of the harbour and a large part of Ava Lahi (NGA).
- Whales. Tonga's Whale Watching and Swimming Regulations 2013 say a private vessel may not approach closer than 300 m to any whale (unless it meets the swimming rules). If a whale approaches you, keep out of its path and, where practicable, keep 300 m away. Nobody may swim with whales except from a licensed whale-swim operator's vessel, jet skis must stay 2,000 m away, and when leaving whales go at idle or no-wake speed until you are 300 m clear.
- Special Management Areas. Many coastal communities manage their own Special Management Areas under the Fisheries Management Act 2002. The Ministry of Fisheries' brochure says nobody may enter or fish in an SMA's Fish Habitat Reserve without the community committee's permission. The brochure is from 2010 and shows only the first six SMAs, so ask the Ministry or the local community before you fish.
Facilities
- Port. Ports Authority Tonga manages the Port of Nuku'alofa. Its website has public notices and port tariffs; we couldn't find yacht berthing information on it.
- Ferries. OpenStreetMap shows the island ferry terminal near the boat harbour.
- Fuel. OpenStreetMap shows several road fuel stations in town. We haven't confirmed marine fuel for yachts from an official source.
