The Niuas cruising guide
The Niuas are Tonga's remote northern outposts: Niuatoputapu and its high neighbour Tafahi, and Niuafo'ou, a volcanic island well to the west. Neither has a Customs port of entry on the official list, the anchorages are exposed or reef-bound, and NGA carries old reports that two of the islands sit 2 miles west of where older charts put them.

- 1Niuatoputapu · Island anchorage (northern outpost)
- 2Niuafo'ou · Open roadstead (volcanic island)

Niuatoputapu
Island anchorage (northern outpost)
Niuatoputapu planning notes: the barrier-reef lagoon off Hihifo, NGA's anchorage, charted-position warnings, the wharf and clearance questions.
Niuafo'ou
Open roadstead (volcanic island)
Niuafo'ou planning notes: a volcanic island with no safe anchorage for large vessels, the small-vessel roadstead off the west side and Futu Wharf.
Passes, harbours and hazards to plan around
- Niuatoputapu: barrier reef 0.7 mile off the north-west side with a lagoon full of shallow patches; anchorage in 18 m outside it; island reported (1994) 2 miles W of its charted position (NGA).
- Niuafo'ou: no safe anchorage for large vessels; small vessels anchor in 12–18 m, 0.1 mile off the west-side village (NGA).
LINZ chart TO 201 covers both islands, with large-scale plans of Niuatoputapu Harbour and its entrance. Check the LINZ notices to mariners before you go.
- Mayday on VHF 16, and set off your distress beacon (EPIRB or PLB) and leave it on until help arrives.

Clearing in and out
Tonga Customs wants its small-craft Advance Notice of Arrival at least 24 hours before your ETA, and a call to Maritime Radio on VHF 16 before you reach your nominated Customs port. Its ports-of-entry page (read 28 October 2026) lists Nuku'alofa, Vava'u, 'Ohonua ('Eua) and Taufa'ahau Wharf, Pangai (Ha'apai). Once you clear out on form C15, you must sail straight for your next overseas port. Each port page has the details.
Cyclone season
Tonga Meteorological Services' Tropical Cyclone Seasonal Outlook for 2026–2027 (released 28 October 2026, read 30 October 2026) gives the official season as 1 November 2026 to 30 April 2027 and notes that cyclones have occasionally formed outside it. It expects an average season, with 2 to 4 tropical cyclones affecting Tonga and a moderate to high chance of at least one severe tropical cyclone, and the highest risk from January to March 2027. It also reports drought declarations in force for Tongatapu, 'Eua, Ha'apai and Niuatoputapu, with Vava'u and Niuafo'ou under drought warning, so plan your water. NGA Pub. 126 adds that at Nuku'alofa sudden, violent west and north-west squalls are common from December to April.
