Swansea Channel & Lake Macquarie

Coastal bar · opening bridge · 4-knot channel · big sheltered lakeLast checked: 27 October 2026Report a correction

Swansea Channel is the way into Lake Macquarie from the sea, and it makes you earn it. There's a proper coastal bar at Swansea Heads, a narrow sandy channel with strong tides, and an opening road bridge you have to book. Get through all that and the whole sheltered lake opens up.

Crossing the bar

⚠ Call marine rescue before you cross. Bar conditions change quickly and our notes can't keep up. Before crossing, contact Marine Rescue Lake Macquarie (radio base at Swansea Heads, crewed 24 hours) for current bar conditions, and log on before you cross and off once you're through.Contacts checked on the unit's official website on 27 October 2026: lakemacquarie.marinerescuensw.com.au/.

What the maps say. TfNSW's map warns that although the channel is regularly dredged, strong currents and shifting sandbars mean the buoys in Swansea Channel are constantly being moved. Cross on what's in the water, not on an old track.

What NGA says. NGA calls for local knowledge, gives the bar 1.2 to 1.8 m but subject to change, and puts the tidal streams at Swansea and Pelican at 4 to 5 knots. It also mentions a narrow channel between Moon Island and the mainland, with rocks on both sides, that needs local knowledge. NGA's description of bar signal lights is old, so ask Marine Rescue instead.

The leads. Marine Rescue Lake Macquarie passes on a TfNSW advice that the leads in from sea need maintenance: the rear lead's paint is worn and it's hard to line up with the front one. Use them with caution.

Lifejackets. Swansea Channel is on the TfNSW list of coastal bars. Everyone on board must wear a lifejacket crossing it, Level 100 or above on boats over 4.8 m.

Black Neds Bay and the bridge

  • Shallow water. TfNSW notice NH2560 (in force since 7 July 2025) says sand movement has cut the depth in the Black Neds Bay marked channel. Deeper boats may be limited by draft and need the channel, so give them room. It's a 4-knot zone.
  • Booking the bridge. Call (02) 4972 7400 or VHF 16 at least an hour ahead for openings from 6 am to 7 pm, and at least 6 hours ahead from 8 pm to 5 am. On weekdays it won't open at 8 am or 4 pm because of road traffic, or in high winds. Wait for the green light.
  • Night works. Marine Rescue Lake Macquarie says the bridge won't open to boats between 7 pm and 5 am from Monday 26 to Thursday 29 October 2026.
  • Waiting. TfNSW's map marks pink moorings either side of the bridge for boats waiting for an opening. The three courtesy poles on the western side are off limits until further notice.

Facilities

  • Marine Rescue. The radio base is on Green Island at Swansea Heads, crewed 24 hours; the rescue boats are at Pelican.
  • Marinas. OpenStreetMap shows Marks Point Marina on the lake's eastern shore.
  • Ramps. Blacksmiths ramp has been closed for rebuilding since 4 May 2026, according to Marine Rescue Lake Macquarie.

Rules in brief

  • Creeks. TfNSW's map says the creeks are 4-knot zones; Dora Creek is also a no-wash zone.
  • Caulerpa. The map asks you to stop the spread of the invasive seaweed Caulerpa taxifolia, found in these waters.
