Lifuka, Uoleva, 'Uiha, Lulunga and Nomuka · 4 guidesLast checked: 28 October 2026Report a correction

Ha'apai is the low, reef-strewn middle of Tonga: coral islands on a bank between Vava'u and Tongatapu, with Pangai on Lifuka as the port of entry. NGA says the best anchorages are off the west side of Lifuka, and warns that buoys may be missing, landmarks are few, and reefs can be impossible to see at high water on a calm day. Further south, Ha'afeva and Nomuka sit among more reefs, with active volcanoes to the west.

Passes, harbours and hazards to plan around

  • Pangai & Lifuka: navigate by eye; Mariner Patch, Lua Sii and Lua Matavai buoys may not be in place; inner anchorages need 5 m draft or less and local knowledge (NGA).
  • Uoleva, 'Uiha & the eastern passes: Ava Auhangamea 3–4 knots and Ava Matamatavika 4–5 knots, with dangerous rips when an easterly meets the east-going stream; use at slack water (NGA).
  • Ha'afeva & the Lulunga Group: Ava Fonuaika is the only pass a vessel should attempt through the southern reef; large vessels use the passage between Tungua and Doyland Reef (NGA).
  • Nomuka & Nomuka Iki: harbour open to the north-west; Lua Vaila (3.7 m) mid-channel; the area south of Otu Tolu needs good light (NGA).

LINZ charts TO 401–TO 405 cover Ha'apai, including a 1:15,000 approach chart for Lifuka (TO 404) and Tofua and Kao (TO 405). NGA reports volcanic activity on Tofua in December 2022.

Clearing in and out

Tonga Customs wants its small-craft Advance Notice of Arrival at least 24 hours before your ETA, and a call to Maritime Radio on VHF 16 before you reach your nominated Customs port. Its ports-of-entry page (read 28 October 2026) lists Nuku'alofa, Vava'u, 'Ohonua ('Eua) and Taufa'ahau Wharf, Pangai (Ha'apai). Once you clear out on form C15, you must sail straight for your next overseas port. Each port page has the details.

Cyclone season

Tonga Meteorological Services' Tropical Cyclone Seasonal Outlook for 2026–2027 (released 28 October 2026, read 30 October 2026) gives the official season as 1 November 2026 to 30 April 2027 and notes that cyclones have occasionally formed outside it. It expects an average season, with 2 to 4 tropical cyclones affecting Tonga and a moderate to high chance of at least one severe tropical cyclone, and the highest risk from January to March 2027. It also reports drought declarations in force for Tongatapu, 'Eua, Ha'apai and Niuatoputapu, with Vava'u and Niuafo'ou under drought warning, so plan your water. NGA Pub. 126 adds that at Nuku'alofa sudden, violent west and north-west squalls are common from December to April.
