Gladstone is a big, busy industrial port, and NGA calls Port Curtis one of the safest and roomiest anchorages on the Queensland coast. For a yacht it's a good place to refuel, restock and wait out a blow, with a big marina in Auckland Inlet right by town. The catch is the shipping: LNG and coal ships use the channels, Gladstone VTS runs the show, and the banks are big. Keep out of the way and you'll be fine.

Getting here

⚠ Call marine rescue before you cross. Bar conditions change quickly and our notes can't keep up. Before crossing, contact MRQ Gladstone (Marine Rescue Gladstone) for current bar conditions, and log on before you cross and off once you're through.
  • Log on/off: phone (07) 4972 3333 or mobile 0417 681 921. MRQ says it monitors VHF 82 and 16, crewed 6:30 am to 6 pm daily, with a 24-hour watch run with Gladstone VTS
  • Emergency: VHF 16 or Triple Zero (000)

This is a ship port with a VTS, not a surf bar. Log on with MRQ Gladstone and keep a listening watch for Gladstone VTS on VHF 13.

Contacts checked on the unit's official website on 19 October 2026: www.mrq.qld.gov.au/rescue-units/mrq-gladstone.

The way in. NGA says the port is entered through South Channel, between the south end of East Banks and Jenny Lind Bank. Streams in the entrance and between South Trees Point and Auckland Point run 2 to 3 knots, and NGA notes the wind can change both the set and the rate a lot. Coming up from Pancake Creek, Jenny Lind Bank and Seal Rocks are the things to give room.

Ships. Most of the harbour is a ship navigation area, and MSQ's G sheets say so in big letters. Listen on VHF 13 for Gladstone VTS, keep clear of ships in the channels, and use the small-craft routes on MSQ's small craft navigation map (linked in the map box above). ⚠ 355/2026 (24 June 2026): pilot boarding ground and prohibited anchorage changes. ⚠ 405(T)/2026 (23 July 2026): amended port navigation depths.

Old depths. MSQ warns that depth contours in most of the harbour haven't been resurveyed since the 2011 and 2013 floods. Trust the chart and your sounder, not the colours on the map.

Berths and anchoring

  • Gladstone Marina. In Auckland Inlet, run by Gladstone Ports Corporation. GPC says it takes about 320 vessels on floating berths, fixed wharf and pontoon moorings, with visitor and transient berths. Book through GPC (link below). MSQ's marina enlargement shows the fuel berth, slipway, toilets and marina office.
  • Anchoring. Port Curtis has lots of room, but stay out of the channels and any prohibited anchorage in notice 355/2026.
  • Boyne River. MSQ's Boyne enlargement warns that the entrance channel needs care to keep enough water under the keel.

Facilities

  • Fuel. GPC's 2026 marina guide says recreational fuel at the marina comes through a marina tenant, with commercial fuel from another.
  • Services. GPC lists power and water at berths, showers and toilets, pump-out, laundry and dry docking for boats up to three tonnes.
  • Ramps. The Gladstone Marina ramp (5 lanes, pontoon) and Goondoon Street ramp are both on the TMR list, with the Calliope River ramp further west.
  • Ferries. The Heron Island and Curtis Island ferries leave from near the marina.

Rules in brief

  • Port. Gladstone pilotage area. Ships over 50 m take pilots (NGA). Small craft keep clear of the channels and listen on VHF 13.
  • Works. ⚠ 518(T), 501(T) and 495(T) of 2026 cover Pelican Banks, Boyne Smelter piling and an unlit Golding Cutting lead. ⚠ 552(T)/2026 (20 October 2026): pipeline maintenance with divers in upper South Trees Inlet, about 23°57.110'S 151°18.755'E, from 21 October to 10 November 2026; the pipeline is marked with a lit buoy, so keep clear of the divers. Check the Gladstone list for what's live when you arrive.
