River and canals · ramps · low bridgesLast checked: 18 October 2026Report a correction

The Nerang is the Gold Coast's backyard river: it winds in from the Broadwater at Main Beach, under the Sundale Bridge and past Budds Beach, Chevron and Paradise islands, then on up through Bundall and Carrara towards Nerang. Off it run the canal lakes of Broadbeach, Mermaid Waters and Clear Island Waters, lined with houses and pontoons. It's a great spot for a runabout, a tender or a small motor cruiser. For anything with a mast or a flybridge, it's a maze of low bridges and thin water, and most delivery skippers only come up here to collect a boat from a private pontoon.

⚠ Not yet independently verified. Treat these as unconfirmed until you have checked them yourself:
  • Bridge and overhead clearances. The figures on this page are read from MSQ map text and haven't been matched to each crossing on the map image. Check the clearance of every crossing on the current chart before you commit a mast or flybridge.

Getting in

You come into the Nerang from the southern end of the Broadwater, through the Gold Coast Seaway if you're arriving from sea (see our Seaway page for the bar). ⚠ Superseded. NGA still describes the old natural Nerang River entrance between Nerang Head and Porpoise Head; that's history. The trained Seaway replaced it.

MSQ's open data lists 61 aids to navigation in this area, 36 of them lit: mostly port and starboard beacons and piles up the main river, with a few special marks. The pink tracks on MSQ's maps are suggested tracks only. They show which side of the marks to pass, nothing more.

Recent changes to the marks (all MSQ notices):

  • ⚠ September 2024: a new port lateral beacon near Surfers Paradise.
  • ⚠ October 2024: a new starboard buoy near Campbell Street, Bundall.
  • ⚠ June 2025: two unlit port buoys downstream of the Pacific Motorway bridge to mark shoaling.
  • ⚠ May 2026: after heavy flows, several aids in the Nerang and Coomera rivers were reported off station. Don't trust a mark until you've seen it's where it should be.

Depths and bridges

Depths. MSQ's 2019 maps carry a caution that the depth contours haven't been re-surveyed in most areas since the 2011 and 2013 floods. There are no contours at all in the canals, the lakes or above the rail bridge. Upstream of Ross Street Bridge the maps say the water is extremely shallow. MSQ's 2017 soundings snapshot gives a median of under 2 m across the whole area, with drying banks. Plan for a dinghy-depth river above the main reaches.

Bridges. ⚠ Unverified. The MSQ maps print a long list of clearances above HAT for the bridges, footbridges and overhead pipes in this area. They range from under 2 m on some canal crossings, through about 3 m and 7 m figures near the Capri Bridge, to around 9 to 14 m on some upriver structures. We haven't matched each figure to its crossing yet, so treat them as a warning, not a number to plan by. Check the chart.

⚠ July 2025: MSQ reported the centre navigation light on the Green Bridge (near HOTA and Chevron Island) wasn't working. ⚠ January 2026: anode repair works were under way on the Sundale Bridge. Check the current notices for both.

Works upriver. ⚠ As at 2026, the Coomera Connector road project has a marine construction zone and a silt curtain on the Nerang River downstream of the heavy rail bridge. ⚠ July 2026: a lit special-purpose buoy (Fl Y 2.5s) marks a sunken vehicle off the Carrara boat ramp.

Anchoring

Our sources don't give any anchorage in the Nerang or the canals, and we haven't read the anchorage symbols off the MSQ maps for this area. MSQ's map marks an artificial reef off this stretch as a prohibited anchorage area. The whole area is also inside the Gold Coast anchoring and mooring time limits (Waterways Management Regulation, Schedule 1). If you want to stop for the night, the Broadwater anchorages are better (see our Seaway and South Stradbroke pages).

Facilities

There are no confirmed visitor marinas on the Nerang in our sources. OpenStreetMap marks one unnamed marina near the river mouth, with services unknown.

  • Whitworths Marine & Leisure has a store near the river at the Southport end (boat dealer / marine shop).
  • Boat sales, charter and repair businesses were listed in live directories along the river and in the Molendinar and Ashmore industrial areas in October 2026. They include Donnelly Engineering (marine engineer), Wrino (marine equipment), Ashdown-Ingram and Tim Stessl Marine (chandlery), and several charter operators around Surfers Paradise. A listing doesn't tell you what they'll do for a visiting boat, so ring first.
  • Ferries. OSM shows ferry stops at HOTA (Home of the Arts) and the Surfers Paradise terminal, and TMR lists public pontoons at Cavill Avenue.

Rescue. The MSQ maps print Coast Guard Southport and VMR Southport for this area. ⚠ As printed on maps current to June 2019. Check current channels and hours with your local marine rescue unit.

Fuel, water and pump-out

We don't have a confirmed fuel berth, water point or pump-out on the Nerang. OSM has a landing called "Fuel Wharf" near the Capri Bridge, but we couldn't confirm fuel is sold there. The nearest fuel we can confirm from the operator is the Runaway Bay Marina fuel jetty, out on the Broadwater.

Boat ramps

The Queensland Government (TMR) list has plenty of ramps, all managed by City of Gold Coast:

  • Main Beach, Waterways Drive: two lanes, pontoon and floating walkway, toilets, not tide-limited. The pick of the bunch.
  • Surfers Paradise, Birt Avenue: one lane, toilets, not tide-limited.
  • Surfers Paradise, Naples Avenue: one lane, not tide-limited.
  • Broadbeach, T E Peters Drive: two lanes, not tide-limited.
  • Carrara, Carrara Road: one lane, not tide-limited (mind the sunken-vehicle buoy).
  • Nerang, Ferry Street: two lanes, toilets, not tide-limited.

Rules in brief

  • Speed. Six knots in all the watercourses and canals running into the river unless signed otherwise. The MSQ schedule also has 6-knot zones on the Nerang River itself (some gazetted for boats 8 m and over, others for all boats) and near Broadbeach Waters. Check the schedule maps for the exact limits, or ask Gold Coast Waterways Authority.
  • Anchoring. Gold Coast time limits apply, and anchoring is prohibited over the marked artificial reef.
  • Events. Fireworks on the river (by HOTA, for example) and on the Broadwater close parts of the water for short periods. They're announced in MSQ notices.

Addresses are from OpenStreetMap where it has one; where it doesn't, we show the name and distance only. ⚠ As at 18 October 2026: we haven't confirmed each place is still trading, so check before you walk.
